Man refused to shower or brush his teeth
Egyptian woman divorces smelly husband

DUBAI (AlArabiya.net)

An Egyptian court granted a woman a divorce on the grounds that she couldn’t stand her husband's nasty smell, press reports said on Tuesday.

The Family Court in East Cairo granted the wife, 37, a divorce from her 39-year-old-husband, a teacher, who refused to shower or brush his teeth, despite her daily pleas and entreaties, the Egyptian daily Al-Akhbar reported.

The court tried to reconcile the couple, but the wife wouldn't budge, so the judge complied with her wish, the paper said.

Muslim law is more flexible than Judaism or Christianity in granting divorce, but the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) still called it "the most undesirable amongst God's permissions."

There is no specific list of reasons for divorce in Islam, but it is seen as a last resort where life between the couple becomes unbearable and all attempts at reconciliation prove futile.

Adultery, physical abuse, impotence, alcoholism or compulsive gambling are the most common grounds, but Islam gives each party the right to seek divorce if married life becomes intolerable for any reason, including lack of communication, physical repulsion or emotional apathy.
