A Saudi car dealership has invited men and women to test drive their new line-up, although women are not allowed to drive in the kingdom, press reports said Monday.

As part of its Ramadan marketing campaign, a Jeddah auto agency will allow anyone who chooses to accept the invitation to drive the car for 24 hours without any obligation, Saudi newspaper Al-Watan reported.

A Saudi woman who received the invitation by mail said a company official confirmed that they would send her the car if she accepted.

"Of course we didn't mean that the woman herself would drive the car," a company spokesman later told the newspaper. "It would be the driver or a family member."

A Saudi women's group is currently petitioning the king for the right to drive. Members of the Committee of Demanders of Women's Right to Drive Cars said they will deliver their request to the King on September 23, Saudi's National Day.
