One million visitors to celebrate the New Year

Historic firework show welcomes 2008 in Dubai

Dubai, the economic hub of the United Arab Emirates, is preparing a special welcome to the New Year, with plans to break the record of the biggest firework display history ever witnessed.

Fireworks by Grucci, one of the best known firework companies in the world, will organize the show, according to UAE daily 7Days. Grucci is the same company that did the fireworks of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

"We want to make Dubai famous worldwide like it has never been before," a member of the organizing body told the paper. He added that they plan to break the record every year starting 2008.

Show organizers say the New Year fireworks will go as high as 1,000 feet, stressing that breaking the record is not their only purpose: "We also want to create a piece of art in the Dubai skies."

Organizers also aim at including Dubai in the New Year celebrations media coverage along with Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Macau, and Singapore.

The show will cover 25 places like Abraj Al-Emarat (Towers of Emirates) and Sheik Zayed Street in downtown, and fireworks will take the shape of a rainbow all along the coast of Dubai.

The celebration will be held in honor of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan, founder of the United Arab Emirates, and its revenue will go to the Zayed Charitable Organization, which promotes peace in the Middle East.

One million visitors are expected to show up in Dubai on New Year's Eve.
