The widow of slain Hezbollah top commander Imad Mughniyah is blaming Syria for the assassination of her husband, while Damascus’s investigation into the killing has implicated “Arab nations”, according to press reports Friday.
"The Syrian traitors assisted in killing my husband," the Italian news agency AKI quoted Mughniyah's widow as telling an Iranian website. She asserted that the Syrians' refusal to allow Iranian investigators to probe the assassination proves their involvement in the murder of Mughniyah.
Iranian Army Radio reported that a dispute has erupted between Mughniyah and Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nassrallah following attempts by the murdered militant to oust Nassrallah and take his place, according to London-based Arabic daily Asharq al-Awsat Friday.
Mughniyah's widow has demanded to leave Damascus following her husband’s death because she “was too angry and frustrated”, according to Saudi daily newspaper Okaz.
Hezbollah MP, Hassan Fadlallah, meanwhile, refused to comment on the press reports, saying "the party has nothing to say at this moment".
In a related development, Syrian investigators have concluded that several Arab nations conspired with Israel's intelligence service Mossad, to assassinate Mughniyah, according to Israeli daily Yidiot Ahronot Thursday.
Damascus was making considerable progress in the investigation of the militant’s death, and would publish the results of its inquiry following the Arab league summit in Damascus in March, the daily reported, citing unnamed Syrian sources.
Mughniyah was killed in a car bomb attack in Damascus on February 12. Iran, Syria and Hezbollah have blamed Israel for the assassination but the latter has denied any role in the killing.
Mughniyah headed Hezbollah's operations branch serving in a role similar to chief of staff, and had been wanted by Israel and the United States for years due to his role in numerous bombings, hijackings and abductions in which hundreds of people were killed. |
