More than 50 Georgian Jews have asked the Jewish Agency to help them migrate to Israel, a spokesman for the organization told AFP on Monday.

"We have received dozens of requests from Georgian Jews who want to immigrate," said Alex Selsky, a spokesman in Jerusalem for the agency, which is tasked with overseeing Jewish immigration to Israel.

"The Jewish Agency will do its utmost to bring them here as soon as possible," he told AFP.

About 12,000 Jews live in Georgia, including 200 in the city of Gori, where Russian warplanes staged bombing raids over the past days.

"The Jews from Gori were almost all evacuated by us to Tbilisi," Selsky said.
