Lebanon has filed a complaint to the United Nations over alleged Israeli spy networks operating in Lebanon, the prime minister's office said Thursday. The development comes on the heels of a government campaign that has resulted in over a dozen arrests of suspects said to have been spying for Israel.

"The Lebanese delegation to the United Nations has filed a complaint over Israel's violation of Lebanese sovereignty and (Security Council) resolution 1701," Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's office said in a statement.

Israel violated Lebanese sovereignty by "setting up on its territory spy rings that were uncovered by the Lebanese army and security services," the statement said.

Lebanon considers itself at war with Israel and spying for or collaborating with the neighboring country can be punishable by death.

The Beirut government also asked U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon to repatriate two suspected Lebanese spies who had fled to Israel in recent days amid a crackdown on alleged Israeli spy networks in Lebanon.

Lebanon has charged a total of 18 persons with espionage since January.

Twelve suspects are in custody, including a retired security general and his wife and nephew, while six remain at large.
