Passenger plane crashes in Jamaica injuring 40
No deaths, 40 wounded in Jamaica airline crash
An American Airlines Boeing 737 overshot the runway while landing at the international airport in Kingston, Jamaica early Wednesday, causing 40 injuries but no fatalities, a local newspaper reported.
"The injured passengers have been taken to the Kingston Public Hospital," Jamaican Information Minister Daryl Vaz told the Jamaica Observer. "There are no reports of fatalities."
The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper said three of the injured were seriously hurt.
American Airlines Flight 331, carrying 148 passengers and six crew members, was en route from Miami to Kingston, the airline confirmed to AFP.
Local media said the plane broke in two after landing in heavy rain at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport at about 10:00 pm (032D GMT.)
The Jamaica Observer newspaper said the plane arrived in pouring rain and overshot the runway.
American Airlines said in a statement the flight originated in Washington DC and stopped in Miami.
The company would not speculate as to possible causes of the accident and said it would make a fuller statement later on Wednesday.
The Jamaica incident is the second runway mishap for American this month. On Dec. 13, the wing of American MD-82 struck the runway in Charlotte, North Carolina, while landing, causing damage to the plane. No one was hurt.
