The UAE Court of Misdemeanors on Sunday found a Syrian man accused of cursing one of his former employees on Facebook guilty and sentenced him to a fine of AED3,000.

The case, a first-of-its-kind trial involving Facebook, saw the 26-year-old defendant, known simply as A.A., admitting to having uploaded pictures with derogatory comments of the claimant, a Lebanese man who he claimed stole money from his cash register.

A.A. confessed to the charges of defamation saying he was provoked by the claimant used to be his restaurant manager when the latter embezzled AED1.4 million from him.

"I am guilty and I did defame him because he provoked me," Gulf news had quoted A.A. as saying to Presiding Judge Ebrahim Khalil Abu Shamma during the trial.

The Court of Misdemeanors is now handling a new case by A.A where he accuses his former manager of a breach of trust.
