Baghdad: Roadside Bomb Aimed at Convoy
The city of Baghdad witnessed another horror this week, when a roadside bomb exploded in the city center – wounding at least seven people and damaging a French embassy convoy on June 20th.
It has been reported that one of the cars was badly damaged by the blast, along with a residential building and two other civilian vehicles, which were found nearby in the area.
Ahmed Sabah, a local witness, narrated the tragic event to Al Arabiya.
"It was a big bang, we felt nothing but glass and furniture falling over our heads. We couldn't do anything; we couldn't get the children out and we could not find our way. Then, we saw a car explode next to us and the house was damaged."
Whilst roadside bombings and street shootouts are still common sights in Baghdad, it must not be forgotten that violence has reduced since its peak in 2006.
This is largely due to the commitment and effort of the United States, whose troops are scheduled to leave Iraq at the end of this year.
