At the stroke of midnight on July 9th, residents of South Sudan celebrated their independence, becoming the world’s newest nation.
The first to recognize the separation was North Sudan’s Khartoum government, hours before the partition officially took place.
Prior to the division, Sudan was Africa’s largest country. By next week, South Sudan is expected to be recognized by the United Nations as its 54th member state in Africa, as well as the 193rd country.
