EU Offers Supports for New Libya
On July 14, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy offered assistance to Libya, saying the Transitional National Council had a key role to play in shaping the country’s future.
Mr. Van Rompuy made his comments after meeting the leading member of the Transitional National Council, Mahmoud Jibril at the European Council in Brussels.
Mr. Rompuy Said, "We are committed to the development of a new democratic, unified and prosperous country. The TNC has a key role to play. Libyan leadership and ownership remain vital. The EU has opened an office in Benghazi to assist building a new country, providing support to civil society, the media, women and youth.Human rights and the rule of law need to become a part of the DNA of the new Libya."
Mr. Jibril said, "We also talked about how we can join hands to plan for the future, for a unified one country with Tripoli as its capital, how to save as much bloodshed as possible and shorten the period of conflict and focus really on a unified Libya for unified people building their own country and their future."
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso also met the TNC delegation a day earlier and offered Libyan opposition assistance in democratic reforms as soon as they reach a resolution in securing Muammar Qaddafi’s exit.
