Pro-Assad Assaults Intensify in Homs

Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar Al Assad killed 13 people in the Syrian city Homs on July 19. Gun fire could be heard on video footage uploaded on a social media website showing troops attacking a funeral near a mosque in Homs.

The Local Coordination Committee says three mourners at the funeral were killed in addition to 10 people killed a day earlier.

Al Arabiya is not able to independently verify the video which was obtained through a social media website.

Homs has been a major center point for pro-democracy activists trying to topple Assad from power.

Mr. Assad described the uprisings to be caused by foreign conspiracies to ignite sectarian conflicts in the country. However, the Syrian opposition argues that the regime plays on sectarian fears to stay in power.
