Libyan Rebel Fighters Fast and Fight

On the first day of Ramadan, August 1, Libyan rebels seized control over the outskirts of Zlitan. The rebels were able to secure the town of Zlitan early in the holy month, for, as able-bodied Muslims, they are required to fast from food and drink throughout the day. The rebels, who already have to fight in extreme heats, will now have to contend with this added challenge.

At this new military base, some rebels must stay behind to prepare food and drink for their comrades fighting a few kilometers away, so that they may return for an Iftar meal.

Local rebel commander, Husam Hussein, said his group weren't fazed by having to fast throughout the day and would manage to keep their strength in battle: "Fasting has only increased our determination and resolve to defeat the brigades of the tyrant (Gaddafi), to liberate Zlitan entirely, God willing, and make our way to our capital, Tripoli, God willing," he said.

Rebel, Omar Bin Ghuzzi, stated that he didn't feel fasting changed the intensity of his fighting: "We consider this day just like the days before it, when we weren't fasting. We don't feel that much difference. The guys are even more adamant on moving forward during the days of fasting than they were on previous days before it."

Over the past few days, the rebel frontline moved up at least four kilometers, slowly making ground toward Zlitan's eastern outskirts, with the fighting lasting over 48 hours, leaving at least eight injured on Monday, before finally capturing the town. The success at Zlitan is a highly welcome morale boost for the rebels, following months of stalemate across the country.
