Few books have had a more profound impact on human history than the Quran. It shapes the beliefs, lives and the behavior of over 1.5 billion Muslims; it has been the basic source of law, morality and politics for over 1400 years since it was revealed to the prophet Mohamed.
'Reading the Quran' is a new book by Ziauddin Sardar one of the foremost Muslim intellectuals in Britain, offers a refreshingly new interpretation of the Quran, easy to read and understand the complexity of the most sacred text in Islam.
"People in the west have to understand and appreciate what motivate the Muslims, why do they thing the way they think , and how they structure their lives. they need to know in an interconnecting world, it is their duty to know. They have at least to make an effort, read and understand the Quran," Mr. Zardar said.
'Reading the Quran' is an open book that takes readers through different verses of the holiest text and the main conceptions of the Quran, giving Sardar's own interpretation emphasizing on the context, when it was revealed? Under what social conditions? and how the sacred text relay to the contemporary world?
"What I am trying to do is to take them to quran in less baffling and more enlightening way to say that the universal message of the quran is applicable to all, in that sens if you appreciate the message of the quran it does not matter if you are from the east or the west," Mr. Zardar added.
Mr. Sardar believes there is a duty to interpret Quran every 2 to 3 generations as there is no single interpretation that is valid for all time and just like in human culture we need plurality and multiplicity of interpretation of the Quran.
