From Kuwait Times: Diwaniyas define Kuwaiti social life

Diwaniya is an important aspect of Kuwaiti culture and traditions, forming an integral part of men's social lives. Before the spread of the café trend, Kuwaitis gathered at the diwaniya to discuss different issues, especially politics. They are sometimes referred to as mini-parliaments.

When the Parliament was dissolved in the 1980s, political activists gathered at some diwaniyas, called the ‘Monday's diwaniyas.’ HH the Amir follows the tradition of visiting popular diwaniyas during the holy month of Ramadan. The tradition of attending and visiting diwaniyas has been passed on from one generation to another. Young people frequent diwaniyas and play games liked cards or video games.
