Anti-Qaddafi forces uncovered weaponry in a vehicle carrying a family fleeing Sirte while manning a checkpoint outside the city, one of Muammar Qaddafi’s last remaining strongholds.
Fighters were ordered to check every vehicle leaving the city.
Sirte is surrounded by members aligned with the National Transitional Council, and is under attack by NATO air raids.
While leaders of the opposition claimed Qaddafi was negotiating a truce, the leader of another opposition unit rejected the claim.
Such confusion demonstrates the poor coordination of Libya’s interim government. NTC-aligned units in the east of the city continue to fight, while those in the west await the result of negotiations.
