Report suggests Germans buried allegations against Qaddafi son

German officials buried numerous criminal allegations against ousted Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s son Seif al-Arab for fear of damaging bilateral ties, the weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday.

Germany's foreign ministry had on five occasions informed justice officials in Munich that investigations against Seif al-Arab Qaddafi, who studied there, could create diplomatic problems with Libya.

Between 2006 and 2010, Germany police had opened 11 investigations against the former strongman's son on allegations including arms trafficking, violence, driving without a license and insulting a police officer.

But all the probes were blocked, with police suspecting German intelligence of thwarting their work, the magazine reported.

Members of Qaddafi’s former regime say that Seif al-Arab and three of Qaddafi’s grandchildren were killed in a NATO air strike on Tripoli on April 30, but Italian President Silvio Berlusconi has denied this.
