At least 67 people died and 288 were injured in traffic accidents during the four-day-long Eid al-Adha holiday as of Wednesday afternoon, but the most intense traffic on intercity roads was expected to be on Thursday, the last day of the holiday.
Although the final toll is not yet known, the numbers, however high they are, indicate a decrease from the number of fatalities in accidents in previous years. More than 100 were killed and 800 others were injured during last year's nine-day Eid al-Adha holiday. A total of 162 people died and 907 were injured in traffic accidents that took place across Turkey during this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday in September, which was also a nine-day holiday.
Many people used the four-day holiday to visit relatives or holiday resorts, the reason why many lives were cut short. Eight deaths were reported on the first day, while 39 were injured. On Sunday, the second day of the holiday, 15 died while another 65 were injured. On the third day 16 people died, while 68 were injured. On the last day, as of 1 p.m., 14 people were reported to have died in various accidents.
