Jordanians show support for Arab League decision

Hundreds of demonstrators on Saturday rallied by the Syrian embassy in the Jordanian capital of Amman to express their solidarity with the Arab League’s decision to suspend Syria for failing to stop the crackdown on civilian protestors.

People showed their support for Syrians living in Homs as they have remained defiant in the face of the ensuing crackdown.

Mohammed is one of 300,000 Syrians residing in neighboring Jordan and says the Arab League’s decision has been long overdue and is monumental towards ensuring victory.

The Arab League decision comes in light of Western powers calling for further pressure on President Bashar al-Assad as armed forces continue killing civilians demanding an end to his regime.

The organization announced both economic and political sanctions against Assad’s government, and asked member countries to withdraw their ambassadors from their posts in Syria.

Despite some hesitancy by member states who feared the decision would be seen as an act of disloyalty, Assad himself shunned the peace deal he had signed earlier this month.

According to various rights groups, at least 250 have been killed in the month of November whereas the United Nations estimates that 3,500 have died since the unrest began mid-March.
