From Jordan Times: Reflections of the Palestinian quest for freedom
AMMAN — Over 40 years after his first exhibition, artist Mahmoud Taha’s work continues to be driven and inspired by the Palestinian people’s quest for freedom.
“My work revolves around Jerusalem and the Palestinian refugees,” he told The Jordan Times at his latest exhibition “The Tenth Maqama: Paper, Clay & Memory IV” at Nabad Art Gallery.
Working with ceramic and paper, Taha dedicates his art to relate the oppression that the Palestinians suffer under, using abstract designs, calligraphy and a rich combination of colours and textures.
Images of a group of people are sometimes in the background of his work, in an expression perhaps of displacement and exodus.
In one piece, three human shapes are gradually dissolving into the background, reflecting the plight of the Palestinians in the Diaspora.
The Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque are also ever-present in Taha’s art as a potent symbol of the occupied lands.
