Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists have kidnapped three young women and two men from the Şemdinli district of Hakkari province, all of whom are related to the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, the Akşam daily reported on Wednesday.
This incident created tension between the terrorist organization and the Kurdish leader when the PKK refused his request to release the kidnapped people and stated that the kidnapped individuals will be forced to serve in the militia arm of the terrorist organization.
Kurdish officials in northern Iraq took a number of steps to cut PKK smuggling between Iraq and Turkey. Barzani's move to disrupt these smuggling practices, which are known to be the PKK's biggest source of income, has worried the PKK, Akşam stated. In a radiophone conversation between high-level PKK leaders, one of the terrorist leaders said it is not worth cutting a million-dollar financial line for five people, the Akşam daily reported on Wednesday. The daily added that one of the kidnapped men had successfully escaped and gone to police in Şemdinli to seek safety from the PKK.
