Chancellor Angela Merkel would welcome joint German-Italian approval of key EU crisis-fighting measures, her spokesman said Wednesday, but denied a report their parliaments had reached such an accord.
Asked about an Italian report Monday that the two legislatures were planning simultaneous ratification of the European fiscal compact and European Stability Mechanism before the summer recess, Steffen Seibert said: “The chancellor would welcome such a signal.”
He confirmed that Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti had discussed coordinating ratification during a meeting in Rome in March so as to “send a message” of unity to European partners.
