UAE soccer club Al Wasl has decided to fire its coach, the famous Argentinian Diego Maradona, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.
The board of directors of the club decided to “terminate the duties of the coaching staff under the leadership of Diego Maradona,” according to the statement
The decision came after board members met to evaluate the coaching staff of the club.
Maradona joined Al Wasl FC in 2011 and spent only one season in charge of the team.
During this time, the Argentinian 1986 World Cup winning legend, only managed to lead the team to an eighth position in the UAE Pro-League, while the club lost the Gulf Clubs Championship final on penalties and crashed out of the President’s and Emirates Cups in the quarter-finals
The UAE club’s new board of directors rejected last month rumours that Maradona had been dismissed , but apparently on Tuesday he was informed that his contract has been terminated a year before it was due to expire.
Maradona returned to coaching in 2008 to guide the Argentina national team, being sacked two years later following La Albiceleste’s quarter-final exit at the World Cup in South Africa.
