Syria said it regards Morocco’s ambassador to Damascus as a persona non grata in response to a similar move by the North African nation, Syrian state television said.
“Syria has just considered the accredited Moroccan ambassador to Syria persona non grata,” ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said via Twitter.
Earlier on Monday, Morocco asked Syria’s ambassador to leave the country, declaring him a persona non grata, the state-run Maghreb Arabe Presse reported, citing the foreign ministry.
Morocco’s Foreign Ministry said it had asked the Syrian ambassador to leave the country immediately.
Earlier in the day, a Syrian embassy official denied speculation that the ambassador had defected.
