In addition to being a member of the Arts Award jury at the UNESCO, the Tunisian artist Nja Mahdawi enjoys special ties with several Arab Gulf nations where he designed a number of state facilities, especially airports.
The artist, who was born in 1937, graduated from the Academy of Arts in Rome and from the Louvre School. He is a versatile artist with multi-faceted techniques who was granted several awards including the Grand Prize for Art
and Literature in Tunisia.
He takes refuge when materializing his thoughts on fabrics, leather or any other vibrant raw material. His art knows no limitation as he unconventionally draws on airplanes, drums and walls.
Al-Mahdawi describes his work by saying, “Letters are in existence everywhere, yet without forming any significant word or content.”
This approach with letters took him to new heights in deploying myriad letters and breaking their dead silence to speak volumes.
His highly skeptical nature is what gave him an edge to mold shapes with skillful mixture of colors. “You always have to take creativity with a grain of salt,” he often says.
An episode of ‘Nawafeth’ (Arabic for ‘Windows’) series featuring Mahdawi was aired on Al Arabiya News Channel on Monday. ‘Nawafeth’ features fine artists from the Arab World.
The series is to release 100 episodes that will showcase profiles of the artists working in different art forms.
