Medina Mosque houses 10,000 carpets

People in the Eastern world have always been fascinated with red carpets. Kings and emperors from ancient times took pride having them in their courts. The value of a red carpet has made it a fixed asset and an integral part of any wealth.

That is why Muslims started using red carpets in mosques as an indication of how valuable those places are, and as an assertion of their position as the real wealth of the Muslim nation.

The Medina Mosque is home to 10,000 carpets that adorn its inside and outside. The carpets in the mosque are of premium quality and have been especially manufactured to be placed there.

“The mosque has 3,500 carpets inside, 2,000 on the roof, and 4,000 in the spaces surrounding the mosque. There are around 9,500 carpets in the mosque throughout Ramadan and the Eid. There’s also an extra 500 carpets to be used when needed.”

The Saudi government does not talk about the amount of money it spends to tend to the mosque or the carpets that adorn it, but the vast red handiwork enveloping Medina clearly shows the value of these items.
