Moroccan artist Mohammed al-Mulaihi is one of the most important fine artists in Morocco. His paintings are inspired by his heritage and international culture.
He was born in 1936 in the Mediterranean coastal town of Asilah, the seascape portrayed by recurring waves in his paintings.
“The sea of Asila01h is like a daily newspaper. Once fishermen awake, they make their way to check the color of the sea each morning to determine whether it is suitable for fishing,” Mulaihi said.
At the age of 55, the artist left the town of Tetouan to begin his artistic journey. He traveled to Seville and Madrid in Spain, and Rome, Italy, where he met Alberto Moravia and learned about Italian culture. He also met his future wife.
“My wife and Alberto’s wife are sisters,” he said.
Mulaihi continued traveling, to the United States, and finally Paris, France, broadening his knowledge and experience.
He founded the Asilah Arts Festival in 1978 and it has become regionally known for being a platform for fledgling artists and intellectuals.
