Arab artists: Memmar paints lifelike canvas

Iraqi artist Ali al-Memmar has earned phenomenal fame for his lifelike paintings on horses.

Al-Memmar was born in Baghdad in 1965. He graduated from the Painting Department at the Fine Art Faculty in Baghdad in 1985 as well as the Painting Department at the Fine Art academy in Baghdad in 1991.

In 1985, he won the “Faeq Hassan” golden medal in the Youth festival in Baghdad.


A 28 meter mural of the Iraqi artist is present at the Dubai International Airport that dates back to 2001.

Al-Memmar’s mastered painting of horses giving a viewer the feel the horses are about to jump out of the canvas.

“Critics believe my horses are an embodiment of women,” said al-Memmar.

His rich experience made him deviate from the school of his master to chart out a new path of his own.

Al-Memmar was so obsessed with his horses that his fans believed was his only forte. The horses were his eternal heroes and he remained loyal and beholden to them.

He is a member of the International Association of Fine Arts (AIAP) at UNESCO and a member of both Iraqi Fine Association and the Emirates Association for Fine Arts.

Ali Al Memmar when he was fortunate to be a student of the reputed Iraqi artist Faeq Hassan who was a master in painting horses.

His rich experience made him deviate from the school of his master to chart out a new path of his own.

“My paintings are sincere manifestation of authenticity and chivalry at a time when all the values of bravery are lost,” said al-Memmar.
