The embattled Syrian regime was involved in a number of secret plots that aimed at shaking the security and stability of its neighbor Jordan and turning the peaceful protests into armed strifes, Syrian security documents obtained by Al Arabiya revealed.
The documents were obtained with the assistance of members of the Syrian opposition who refused to elaborate on how they laid hand on the documents.
Al Arabiya said that it has verified and authenticated hundreds of these documents and that it has decided to disclose the ones with substantial news value and political relevance.
One classified document, dated Dec. 3, 2011, is a message from Maj. Gen. Zul Himma Shaleesh, the head of the presidential security body – who is also the cousin of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – addressed to Col. Fouad Fadel, coordinator of foreign operations and the liaison person with the Syrian agents abroad.
“The reports received from Dr. Bahgat Suleiman, our respectful ambassador to the Jordanian Kingdom, show that there is tension in the Jordanian street (protests and popular movements against the current regime). Jordan is fully aware of the situation in our nation and is supplying shelter to the fleeing members of the Free Syrian Army as well as other anti-regime activists. In light of the current situation of our beloved nations, as well as the changes taking place in the regimes of some Arab countries – and based on the recommendation by the security committee – it has become our main duty to deal with the crisis and punish anyone who dares to conspire against the state security, so please take the necessary measures,” the document said.
According to the leaked document, Shaleesh gave his orders for pushing some agents to support in igniting the trouble in the regions already rocked by protests in Jordan.
Khaled al-Saleh, member of the executive bureau of the Syrian National Council, told Al Arabiya that there are three main reasons behind targeting Jordan.
“There is an attempt to export the Syrian crisis. Obviously, the Syrian regime is passing through a real crisis. It is trying to turn the world attention away from the crimes committed inside to a created crisis in Jordan,” Saleh said.
He added that there is also a Syrian attempt to embarrass the Jordanian government, which showed big support to the Syrian revolution and hosted tens of thousands of Syrian refugees.
“The third and most important reason is the fact that the Syrian regime is trying to send a message to the international powers, underlining that it is still capable of creating chaos in neighboring states,” Saleh noted, pointing out that Assad himself hinted that he will move the war to the neighboring countries.
Saleh explained that by mentioning “the changes in the regimes of some Arab countries” in the document, the Syrian regime is trying to benefit from the popular movements taking place in some Arab countries to create and escalate crises in those countries, and thus turning the world’s attention away from the crimes it commits inside Syria.
“There might be another explanation; which is the fact that the Syrian regime might consider itself responsible for protecting some brotherly regimes,” he said.
Back to the document, Shaleesh gave his orders for providing weapons to non-Syrians especially in the troubled regions in Jordan.
“Probably, he is referring to light weapons, as Syria does not aim to oust the Jordanian regime, but only to ignite the chaos,” Saleh explained.
Shaleesh also underlined the importance of linking all the agents to Jordanian nationals known for their opposition to the current regime.
“There are actually two groups of opposition in Jordan. The first group has legitimate demands and the Syrian regime is trying to make use of its members in achieving its goals. But the more serious group is the second one that has certain agendas linked to the Syrian regime,” he said.
Providing Jordanians with money, weapons
In the document, obtained by Al Arabiya, Shaleesh orders providing support to the Jordanian peaceful protesters through money and weapons for the purpose of escalating the chaos in Jordan if needed.
He also gave his orders for the setting up of an “operations bureau” affiliated to the Foreign Intelligence Department, to be responsible for carrying out operations against Jordanians who provide help to the fleeing Syrians.
“The Jordanian King has referred to the presence of some Syrian cells that already carried out some operations,” Saleh said.
Finally, Shaleesh gives his orders for his agents to assassinate specific Free Syrian Army members, for the aim of embarrassing the Jordanian regime and sending a message to the international community about the capability of the Syrian security department.
“All countries are fully aware of the criminal attitude of the Syrian regime. I just wish that the Jordanian regime would deal in a stricter way with the Syrian ambassador there, whether by sending him back home, or by monitoring the embassy activities,” Saleh said.
Creating more chaos in Jordan
In another undated document, obtained by Al Arabiya, a report was sent by Waleed Abdul Rahman, the head of the Inspection at the Syrian Foreign Intelligence, to the joint committee for the Syrian security bodies. It included an explanation to the state of chaos in the Jordanian street and the role played by the Higher Coordination Committee for the Jordanian Political Parties, which includes a number of opposition parties. The demands of the committee focus on a call for dissolving the parliament and limiting the King’s liabilities, as well as sacking the successive governments.
According to the document, Abdul Rahman explained how he pushed his agents to merge with members of those parties in an attempt to turn them into an armed opposition. “We have also held some contacts and meetings with some prominent opposition members to convince them to take part in the protests, to add a kind of legitimacy to such popular movements, similar to what had happened in 9/4/2012,” revealed the document.
“Yes, there were protests in April and the documents reveal that the Syrian regime tried to seize the opportunity to escalate the state of chaos and shake the stability in Jordan,” Saleh said.
Referring to the undated document, Saleh said that ignoring the date is a technique followed by the Syrian regime in order to show that the documents have no significance, in case they were somehow leaked.
However, Saleh said that by reading some of the documents, “we can easily perceive their dates,” because they are mentioning specific incidents.
According to Saleh, the Syrian regime will try to shake the stability and security on all fronts; in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. It even tried to do the same in Israel.
