Susan Firouz, is an Afghan rap musician. Here in a small recording studio in Kabul, she voices out the experiences of her people living abroad.

“The pain and disrespect my parents and I have endured while living abroad as refugees, have inspired me to sing, especially to rap our challenges,” Firouz said.

The 23-year-old is the first female rapper in Afghanistan. Firouz and her family moved back to Afghanistan after living as refugees in Iran. Her career path is daring as women’s appearance on stage is a bit of a taboo in Afghanistan.

“Girls and women can achieve their talents’ ambitions. I decided to go forward in the music industry and nothing can stop me,” Firouz added.

The young artist says rapping is the best way to express the misery she had endured during her childhood when she was living in Iran. Her family had fled to Iran following a civil war in Afghanistan in the 1990’s.
