Khalid al-Meqdadi started his relationship with art at a young age, the bond grew with maturity and he currently holds the title of an accomplished painter on the Iraqi art scene.

Learning from prominent figures in Iraqi art history, al-Meqdadi believes that inspiration can be found anywhere, “artists are always on the lookout for ideas, even when they take a stroll in the streets. This is what Fayeq Hassan taught us when he asked us to keep a watchful eye on everything - even the trees, where we may see different shapes that could ignite our imagination.”

Al-Meqdadi has successfully incorporated various painting techniques into his work, this multi-disciplinary approach was facilitated by his study of art, sculpture and ceramics.

“Techniques sometime lead us to create concepts. It is not about aesthetics only. The multiplicity of techniques enabled me to depict excessive reality, abstractionism and impressionism,” explains the artist.

Al-Meqdadi acknowledges that he uses his country for inspiration, the motifs and images synonymous with Iraqi culture make common appearances in his work.
