UAE’s al-Wasl coach, Frenchman Bruno Metsu, has resigned from his post on Friday after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, Egypt’s al-Ahram sports online reported.

“Due to his current health condition, Mr Bruno Metsu has requested to be relieved from his duties as head coach of al-Wasl,” the club said on Twitter.

“The al-Wasl Board has accepted Mr Metsu's request and thanked him for all he has given, wishing him a speedy recovery and best wishes.”

Initial rumors circulated about Metsu’s condition after he was said to have been suffering from abdominal pain and admitted into a hospital in Dubai on Oct. 14.

Metsu signed a two-year contract with al-Wasl in July, a week after Argentinian legend Diego Maradona was dismissed from the club that finished eighth in the 12-team league last season.

He was the national coach in Qatar and also worked in several clubs in the emirate before moving to Dubai this summer.
Before coming to the Gulf, the Frenchman led Senegal to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals.
