Jordan teams up with U.N. to minimize Syrian sufferage

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh met with the director of U.N. Development Programme’s Arab States bureau on Thursday to discussed the U.N.’s development projects to aid Syrian refugee while Princess Basma of Jordan expressed hope in the efforts made between Jordan and U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) towards the Syrian cause.

Judeh stressed the necessity to support Jordan in order for the government to fulfill its humanitarian duty in serving the “Syrian members” by sheltering over 200,000 Syrians.

Princess Basma, president of the National Alliance Against Hunger and Malnutrition (NAJMAH), discussed with WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin the efforts needed between the two organizations to aid. Cousin discussions highlighted the Syrian aid plan, which includes a 100-day campaign to combat hunger and starvation in remote areas.

Cousin, who was on a tour of countries holding Syrian refugees, and stressed her persistence to expand prospects of cooperation with NAJMAH to end the crisis of hunger and starvation as she met with Judeh to coordinate the needed assistance to Syrian refugees, offering to provide aid for pverrty pockets in Jordan.

Cousin made her way to the al-Zaatari Refugee Camp near Mafraq, 80km northeast of Amman, to oversee services provided to refugees and she spoke with some refugees and asked about their needs and the difficulties they face.

At a press conference held at the camp, Cousin noted that the WFP needs $80 million, of which $33 million has been secured so far, to meet the needs of displaced Syrians.

Cousin said the WFP will provide meals to Syrian school students in the camp in the near future and doing all it could to meet the needs of all Syrian refugees.
