US tracked test parcels from Yemen in Sept.: reports

U.S. intelligence officials tracked several shipments of household goods from Yemen to Chicago in September and considered that the parcels might be a dry run for a terrorist attack, The New York Times and ABC News reported early Tuesday, as Western governments tightened freight security.

Two parcels addressed to Jewish institutions in Chicago and containing the lethal explosive PETN hidden in ink toner cartridges were uncovered on Thursday on cargo planes en route to the United States in Britain and Dubai.

Intelligence officials believe the tracking of the shipments may have been used to plan the route and timing for two parcel bombs discovered on Friday on U.S.-bound planes.
