With the U.N. envoy holding meetings with the Opposition and President Saleh, demonstrators in “Change Square expected to spend an uneventful day protesting, savoring their recent victories on the political and diplomatic scenes against Saleh’s decades long rule.

“After 9 months of nothing, nothing, and nothing, things are starting to go our way. Inshallah with Eid will celebrate Saleh’s departure,” said a young protester.

As the march advanced through the streets of Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, following the usual itinerary through Zubeyri Street, al-Qaa and around Asr, protesters were attack in an unprecedented manner.

As soon as they reached Sana’a old university they were met by a barrage of Central Security forces, guns at the ready and fingers on the trigger.
Eye-witnesses reported that tear gas canisters were thrown directly at protesters, shocking them to such an extent that many actually passed out, unable to breathe properly.

Cries of anger erupted from the crowd as their cheerful mood gave way to sheer repulsion towards a regime which continues to persecute them and ignore their demands.

Several protesters were screaming anti-regime slogan, some saying that Saleh would meet Qaddafi’s fate if he continues to kill his own people.
“He is killing our youth and they [the international community] are doing nothing but giving chances after chances. What about us don’t we count for something?” said a student.

“This man [Saleh] will stop at nothing, he is a murderer, a sick, sick Godless man. He will end up like Qaddafi if we ever put our hands on him,” said an angry former policeman who in protest to the regime quit his job 6 months ago to join the revolution.
