An Egyptian campaign to defend Islam’s Prophet Mohammed was launched on Friday under the title “Knock on Doors,” which aims mainly to collect one billion Egyptian pounds ($165 million), an Egyptian daily reported.

Mohammed Assem Abdul Maged, a leader in the Islamist groups al-Jamaa al-Islamiya and al-Ansar movement to defend the Prophet Mohammed, launched the campaign, according to a report published by Egypt’s Independent.

The sum, scheduled to be collected, would be used to set up a TV satellite channel and a publishing house to publicize true information about the Prophet Mohammed and to defend him against insults.

Abdul Maged told Egypt’s daily al-Masry al-Youm that he was also considering establishing a film production company abroad as part of the campaign.

A low-cost anti-Islam film posted recently on YouTube caused outrage throughout the Muslim world and left a number of people killed including the U.S. ambassador to Libya and 3 other U.S. diplomats.

“The billion pounds will also be used to support the Syrian people by sending medical convoys and food ... [and] a portion will be allocated to the Syrian families in Egypt,” Abdul Maged was quoted as saying.

“Many young people from both liberal and Islamic parties joined the movement” to defend the Prophet Mohammed, he claimed.
