Gay couples can now declare their marriage status on Facebook with the newly revealed icons of same-sex couples, the British Daily Mail reported.

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and his new partner Sean Eldridge were among the first to use the new icons upon their marriage over the past weekend.

Options like “In a Civil Union” or “In a Domestic Partnership” have been available for gay couples to use since February of last year. The icon, however, is quite revolutionary compared to the other options.

Meanwhile, the age-old “married” status on the site was always accompanied by an icon depicting a heterosexual couple.

With the vast numbers of subscribers to the site, the move, obviously, was welcomed by gay communities around the world.

“Following Facebook's addition of domestic partnership and civil union to profile options last year, these new marriage icons for timeline are another important way for same-sex couples to be recognized,” Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's Allison Palmer said on one hand.

On the other hand, anti-gay Facebook users were not happy with the new icon. A new page on the site sprung up expressing their anger called One Million Moms -- an anti-gay offshoot of the American Family Association.

Although the organization heavily utilizes Facebook to promote their cause, some users posted a link to a press report stating “Yes boycott Facebook,” as reported by The Daily Mail.
