An Iraqi spokesman says 12 security forces have been killed and an army helicopter downed in two days of fierce clashes with militants in the country’s northeast.

Diyala provincial spokesman Salih Ebressim Khalil said one soldier was killed and another wounded on Thursday when al-Qaeda in Iraq insurgents shot at an army helicopter and forced it to make an emergency landing.

Khalil said 11 federal policemen were killed late Wednesday in the fighting in the town of Hadid, about 10 kilometers north of the Diyala provincial capital of Baqouba.

The assault comes days after al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility for a wave of violence that killed 115 people in the country’s deadliest day in more than two years.
